What to bring
Adventure bike (Off-road tourer, gravel bike, CX bike)
Bikepacking bags (unless hiring)
Cycling kit, shoes, helmet
Off the bike clothes – a simple change of clothes to sleep and relax in for the evening
We ride a mixed-terrain route on this tour so we recommend bringing a bike that can handle some light off-road use. A gravel bike, cyclocross bike or adventure bike would be ideal. We don’t recommend using a mountain bike purely because of the distances. We recommend using a minimum tyre width of 33mm. Road bikes are not suitable for this tour.
Our routes are a mixture of paved and unpaved roads. Please note that the roads will be busy at times when leaving/entering the Cities, though we have done our best to use cycle lanes and quiet ways where possible. Once out of London and Manchester we use mainly single-track lanes, forest roads and bridleways, which are mostly hard-packed sand and gravel.
Health & Fitness
Please read the daily cycling distances and be confident in your ability to complete them before booking onto this tour. The rides are not overly challenging but do require previous cycling experience, especially when riding within the cities. There are a few ups and downs on the route – especially on Escapade: Manchester – so we recommend you have a reasonable level of fitness to complete the tour.
